In a 28 day cycle, ovulation normally occurs on the 14th day of the cycle, but may occur anytime between the 12th and 16th day.Sperm deposited in the female genital tract may survive for three days although their capacity to fertilize the ovum dimnishes after 24 hours. The ovum itself may live 24 hours so that sexual intercourse between the 9th and 17th day result ina pregnancy.
The risk (or) fertile period is calculated from five days before ovulation to three days after ovulation.
For example, in a 28 day menstrual cycle, the fertile period is from day 9 to day 17.The safe period is day 1 to 8 and day 18 to 28.
In a 35 day menstrual cycle, the ovulation occurs on 21st day, so the fertile period is from day 16 to day 24, or alternatively, the safe period may be calculated as from 1 to 15 and from day 25 to day 35. |
